I joined with my tattoos covered (without using the shower room) and kept them out of sight while training, but they were spotted while I was filling in paperwork, and I was made to cancel my membership. But the staff were gentle, and the way they turned me down wasn't unpleasant.
The membership info page says: "Persons with tattoos (including fashion tattoos), etc. may be refused membership."
