There doesn't seem to be any size limit on tattoos. When I asked at the front desk if tattoos were OK, they said it's fine.
The onsen water was straight from the source and good too!
Would it be OK even if it's not just one or two tattoos, but quite a large area?

When I went in, I checked with the staff, and they said it was fine, so I got in. They were very polite.

When I asked by phone, they said I could bathe. The person who answered was a male staff member, and he wasn't unpleasant at all; I got a good impression. He said to keep them covered only when entering the building.
The Kami no Yu Onsen website also says they don't turn away people with tattoos (including fashion tattoos), and I was happy to get to try 7 onsen baths at different temperatures.
