Ideally, people with tattoos and people without would both have manners toward each other when using onsen facilities, right!! I often see the opinion that people with tattoos have bad manners, but the reality is there are plenty of people, and families too, without tattoos who have bad manners, right? When it comes to manners, I think those are just uneducated people whose families never taught them... Tattoos carry all kinds of feelings too. Some people get them as a prayer or wish, some to cover scars from surgery. Not having tattoos doesn't make you right, and having them doesn't make you right either, but I hope the world becomes a place where we can meet each other a bit more halfway. If you can't meet halfway, you can just keep your distance, and go somewhere only people without tattoos can come. This is a facility with lots of people from overseas, after all. I got mine to cover scars, as a wish, and to ward off bad luck. I'm really grateful for Hoheikyo. Let's keep being careful so we don't end up feeling unwelcome again!

  2. Got in

I went for the first time on 2025.12.31. I have pretty heavy tattoos, clearly visible on my front and back. The poster in the changing room also said tattoos are OK but to mind your manners. On a side note, I'm vegan, and I had the vegan Indian curry before bathing. Even the extra-hot one is way too sweet, but they give you hot sauce for free, so I got to eat a properly spicy Indian curry. The snow-view outdoor bath was the best! I recommend it!

  3. Got in

No problem at all. The person from the restaurant (curry shop) was bathing too, and they have tattoos, after all.

  4. Got in

I always go in with no problem, and when I asked the staff, they gladly said tattoos are OK!

  5. Hmm…

Customers with tattoos were cackling loudly, swimming in the onsen, and splashing water on other customers. It was awful. To anyone who goes there after seeing this site, please don't do things that keep making the image of tattoos worse. If people behave that badly, eventually we won't be able to get into any onsen. You stand out just by having tattoos, so be aware of that.
