They sell cover stickers at the front desk. If your tattoo is bigger than you can cover with one hand, you can't get into the main bath, but with a large tattoo you can get into the private outdoor bath.
After I showered, before I got into the onsen, they told me and kicked me out. They did give me a refund.
I had a tattoo on my arm about the size of a small cross covered with tape, and they said it's a no. When I protested, they said just this once and let me in. May 2023.
